Bella sat on the stump and watched the wind blowing in the trees. She felt numb, but she preferred it because she knew as soon as she started to feel again, she would be bawling. It had been over an hour since Bella watched Edward take off into the trees, and as much as she didn’t want to admit it, she was pretty sure he wasn’t coming back.

They had arrived at the campsite, and Edward immediately began pacing it and sniffing each stone, tree, and bush in the area while Bella set up the campsite. She had thrown the sleeping bag and air mattress in the tent and brought the cooler from the car. She had been about to call out to him when he perked up as the wind blew across him, and he took off running into the woods.  Bella had dropped the cooler she’d been carrying and ran after him, but it was too late; by the time she had entered the woods, he was out of sight. She’d called out to him a couple times, but with no answer, she found herself back at camp, hoping he’d return.

That hope was fading fast.

Sitting next to her, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her to him. “Bella is sad?” he asked, and she folded her legs up onto the couch to get deeper into the cuddle.

“No, Bella is frustrated, I’m frustrated.” She had taught him ‘I’ and ‘you’ but after speaking in third person for so long, she had a hard time breaking the habit.

“What is frustrated?” he inquired in what Bella had dubbed his studious tone. He was interested in everything, and as soon as Bella had taught him enough to communicate his questions, he had become very serious in learning everything he could.

“It means I feel bad because things aren’t working out the way I want them to,” she replied.

With a vulnerability Bella had come to love he looked down, tucking his chin in against his shoulder. “I no help wolves. I no help Bella.”

Bella had never really considered how the pack dynamics had worked. While it was obvious the wolves had treated Edward as family she had never really thought about what his role was. He was no were near as fast and while he could take down small prey; she doubted he could take something as hefty as a deer down to help feed the pack.

And now that he was in her world, the world he was meant to be born into, there was a chance for him to be helpful but he didn’t know how. Bella felt horrible for rejecting his morning offering when she saw the reason behind it. Edward wanted to learn, but he also wanted to work, to contribute to his new pack…her.

Later that day Bella was working in the garden, filling her baskets with the herbs Rosalie has asked for, when she heard a yell and the rev of an engine. She looked up and watched as Emmett’s truck came barreling down the driveway and through the fence of the pasture, scaring the cows and causing them to run toward the far side.

Bella panicked, wondering if Emmett had a heart attack or something while driving. She dropped her basket and started running toward the truck that was now coming to a stop.  She leapt over the fallen posts and just as she was approaching, the passenger side door flung open and out stepped a laughing Emmett.

He glanced back at Bella and shouted, “Your boy here likes speed.”

Until next time...here's a peek at Edward's next chapter which will be up later today:

Sitting alone watching the sky change colors, I thought of Bella and our lives together growing up. I replayed every moment and let the love we felt back then wash over me. I knew I couldn't, but I wanted to feel that again.

I wanted to look into her eyes again and see the love I used to see when she looked at me. I wanted to wrap my arms around her and promise that I would never let her go again. Assure her that if she still wanted me, if she still loved me, we could be together forever. It was possible now and I could take her with me.

As the sky above me grew dark, I made my decision. I had to see her and if she was happy, I would leave quietly and never return. I would find Carlisle and Esme and live my life with them.

But if happiness had not found her in all these years, I would go to her in the night, take her someplace where I could explain everything and beg for her forgiveness. And if by some miracle she still loved me, I would take her back to Carlisle so he could change her and I could keep her with me for the rest of eternity.

Here's a quick peek at what Edward's been up to while he's been away:

"Edward...Son, please stay calm and let me explain."

"Do not ever call me that," I growled, as I grabbed his hand. "I am not your son."

I threw his hand away from me and was completely taken aback when his body flew across the room.

"Edward," his voice was still calm, "I know you don't understand, but I need you to calm down and let me explain. There's so much to tell you and we need to tend to your thirst."

"Tend to my thirst?" The words didn't match with his previous statement. "How will you tend to my thirst if you claim water will not help?" I growled. "And what promise did you make? To whom? How did I not die along with my parents?" In my anger, each question came out faster than the one before it. "Where am I? What did you do to me? How can I...?"

"Enough!" His voice rang with authority, cutting me off mid-sentence.

He began pacing again, one arm across his chest and the other resting on that arm while his fingers pinched the bridge of his nose.

"You must feed, Edward. It is the most important thing right now. So I'll tell you the one thing that will be the hardest for me to explain."

"Feed?" I asked, confused by his word.

He ignored me and continued.

"You asked me what I've done to you. You asked me why you didn't die with your parents."

The speed of his pacing increased as he continued to speak, not once looking at me while the words flowed from him.

"The simplest answer is...you did."

I felt really bad for keeping Edward's memories of Bella away from him. In my mind, since Carlisle's never had to take responsibility for another vampire before, I felt that he needed to have that uninterrupted time alone with Edward so he could teach him and give him the guidance he never received. Now that Edward does remember, all he wants to do is get to Bella. Unfortunately, Carlisle had to stop him, but he did it with Bella's safety and Edward's sanity in mind.

Sorry no teaser today but the next chapter will be posted soon. So you won't have to wait too long to find out what Bella's been up to and how she's handling herself in the city.

I couldn't let her suffer for too long. I had to do something to help her and her friends out a little bit. Unfortunately, just when things started to get better for them, things go really, really wrong.  And as for that gunshot... we'll find out what happens in chp 16. I know that's evil and I'm sorry. I can tell you that Edward is going to really be fighting hard against his guilt once they do find each other again and he learns everything that Bella went through without him. Carlisle's voice startled me, bringing my focus back to the park. Sitting next to me quickly, he reached out and pulled my hand from the park bench and smoothed out the grooves made by my fingers. I hadn't realized I was holding on so tight.

"Is everything okay, Edward?" I heard his concern.

I sighed. "Yes, just thinking."

"About Bella?"

"As always."

"I am truly sorry, Son." Carlisle leaned forward with his elbows on his knees, hands clasped in front of him. "Unfortunately, never having shared that kind of love myself, I can't begin to imagine the pain and heartache you're going through. I wish there was a way..."

"No, Carlisle," I said, halting his sentence. He looked up at me. "I understand and I'm not asking to go back. Bella deserves to live her life to its fullest and if I can give her that gift by staying away, then that's what I must do. It is my only way to honor her as I would have done as her husband."

Such a hard decision to make.

"The hardest one I'll ever make in my life," I answered his unspoken words.

I'm glad you like Garrett. I know everyone expected it to be James but he didn't fit in that role. He needed to be a companion to Bella and since I'm keeping this as close to canon as I can, there was no way James could have been. And they're close, just not quite close enough. It's coming though...I promise. A major jump in time in the next two chapters will bring them closer to finding each other again. Thanks for the review, darlin. Much love - D

In the six years we'd been together, I'd never seen Carlisle so happy. Finally finding love had changed him completely and he was a whole new man. He actually reminded me of myself years ago when I was with Bella. She simply brought out the best in me and it was exactly what Esme did for Carlisle.

They could barely contain their love for each other so, after years of posing as husband and wife, they made the decision to make their relationship official. As they readied themselves to take this step together, Esme pulled me aside for a quick word.

"My dear Edward, for years you've played the role of brother to us and I have been proud to accept you in that role, but I want something more." She gripped my hand tightly as she spoke.

"Esme, you've brought so much happiness to Carlisle's life and I am grateful to you for making him the man he is today. So please, ask for anything you wish."

Bella will exert her power, however she also has her 'queenly' image to maintain now. King Edward will soon learn his lessons in pleasure ;) I seem to have made a lot of readers happy by the turning down of Lady Jessica! Thank you for reviewing.
