He's just done too much to break Bella's heart and he's not nearly remorseful enough for me.

I have to admit, I'm no skier. I'm more of a sit-in-the-lodge-with-a-book kinda girl. Historical fiction is my favorite, so I also love human Edward in 1918 stories. Beyond Time is the fic that got me inspired to try to write something, I enjoyed it so much. Ski safe, and thanks for reviewing!

Well.... I don't know how much you've read since posting this review, so I'm afraid of giving too much away if you haven't read further. I don't know if writing to her after becoming a vampire would be feasible, assuming it was possible. His newborn thurst would be so overwhelming for about a year, that that would override everything else--including writing to her--I think. That could probably be excused away by telling her he got sick and is very weak as a result. It could take a year or so to build his strength back up and for his letters to resume like normal. But, his life would be so very dramatically different to what it had been, maintainging the facade that it was the same would be incredibly difficult. (For me at least, if not for him.) How could he continue to write about his family and friends, going to college, etc. His human memories would have blurred and faded. The potential for mistakes and contradications to what he'd already written to her would be ski high. He only has her letters to him, his memory of his to her would be faded. No, that connection needed to be lost. Bella needs to mourn the loss of Edward Masen, who truly did die in a way, before she can be ready to love Edward Cullen. I think they're two very distinct individuals. Edward has been through, seen, and experienced too much during the course of the 20th century to be the same person he was as a human.

I loved how you incorporated Edward's family's descendants in the ending. It truly brought the story full circle. And the final paragraph left me with such a warm fuzzy feeling. The Titanic line was so appropriate here...literally because their vampire life mates and figuratively because they discussed the Titanic voyage and tragedy and the movie when they first met through the letters. So poignant...sigh. As I said, beautiful ending.

I'm so glad you liked it! You wouldn't believe how much trouble this chapter gave me! I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to reviews. I've been doing a bit of writing on my new fics and trying to catch up on reading that I just didn't have time to get to, balanced with responding to reviews. And you know, all the boring stuff like going to work, etc.
The scene where Edward meets his human relatives is one of my favorites from the whole story. The current day Masens were who enabled the whole story to happen by saving the desk and passing it on when Bella showed up, so I thought it was only fair to end everything with them knowing that Edward and Bella are together. Edward and Bella basically walking off into the sunset with the Masens looking on.... (Okay--it was cloudy, no sunset, but still.) That was exactly how I wanted to end it.
And I loved the last line. I liked how it tied in the letters.

Edward was 19. Bella was 13. They were next door neighbors. Charlie was the chief of police. Carlisle was a doctor at the local hospital.
Edward’s little sister Alice was also 13 and Bella’s best friend.
While home from college for the summer, Edward spent time with his little sister and her best friend so their parents could all go out for dinner.
Over the next several years, Edward and Bella became good friends, until the summer she turned 16 when she transformed before his eyes.
AH, ExB, Mostly EPOV, sort of coming-of-age, hopefully a little poignant, with a splash of angst until Bella's at least seventeen. Mature for language, eventual lemons and a very spunky Bella.
