We knew it was coming, right? It touched me more because it was so reminiscent of my mother's passing. She kept hanging on because she felt that we needed her. You feel like you will not be able to let them go, but sweet, delicate, young Isabella knew that the time had come. Edward I think will help her with her business venture and get to know her in the process. And will she lean? Maybe a little, but sometimes you have to lean for a while in order to get stronger.

So Edward has found out Bella is 16. Obviously he must get over it, by your teaser, where he wants Bella and Charles to come to dinner.
Charles won't be much older that his eldest.

Thank you for letting us know “exactly” what making merry meant.
So Edward enjoyed a night out at the boys club but as no women were usually allowed inside those hallowed halls he wasn’t womanizing. I’m glad as I would hate to think of him as a 29 year letch after a 16 year old.
He think Bella is 19 and still too young although he is smitten already.
I am surprised he is not more of a snob.
He will get a shock when he finds out she is 16 but he will also be pleased with Bella’s practical sense of what needs to be done as he has no time for the simpering ladies making eyes at him behind their fans but without a genuine bone in their bodies.

How will Edward respond when he learns of the thirteen year age difference?
He seems quite taken with Isabella already. This will be an interesting interaction between two very independent people.

Edward is a good father and loves his children. It shows through his actions, even if they are different than what we would expect today. He does miss Sarah but your right that he misses her more for the children than himself. They should have their mother and it seems he feels he has failed them somehow by her dying. Edward is bitter, and oddly wants to stay that way, it's more comfortable for him. He would love to be ale to truly enjoy his children, sadly he's having a difficult time doing so.
He has views that go acordingly to the time in which he lives, so his amily's actions seem wrong to him.

I feel confident that Edward will get more likable. He does need someone to melt his heart and to open his eyes. The answer to being bitter about the children not having their mother should never have been to make sure they did not have their father either. Even Jasper knows that. So I feel sure there is a loving, compassionate and very "smart" Edward just under the surface. Looking forward to meeting him!

Well, Timothy was right. Esme was an essential part of calming Isabella down and convincing her that not only did Lord Cullen want these changes but Isabella would benefit from the changes two fold by becoming a profitable business woman and having quality time with her mother and brother.
Will Emmett be slowly worked into the position of tenant and contract holder as Isabella and Charles are gradually moved into the Cullen family?

Still seems like an awful lot of work. I’m surprised she could even be presentable after doing all that work. Her hair would stink of animals and be full of soot and dust and her skin and fingernails would be ingrained. Having a bath was a laborious process with heating and pouring the buckets in then emptying the bath once finished, so I don’t think she had time for that.
It’s interesting that she doesn’t trust Lady Cullen she thought all those years of friendship was just to soften the blow of eviction.
I don’t see how she and Edward will have anything in common.
I am interested in what Jasper meant by Edward when he said that as well as attending business in town he was “making merry”. Does that mean he was drinking and womanizing?

The meeting went very well, pass the first moment when Bella almost fainted, which is more than understandable. All three were very good in how they presented the idea, they didn't force it on her, but made it an offer she couldn't refuse. Bella's wish on Emmett being in charge of the task must have been a good surprise for Lord Cullen and Timothy, they knew she has a good heart but they were now able to witness it.
Bella found a way to get to the dance on her own. She can't get there too late since it would look bad on the Cullens and she needs to get the preserves there on time.
She will look amazing, surprise plenty and make Lady Cullen very proud.

I don’t know how Isabella will do it all. She doesn’t want to be a ward of Lord and Lady Cullen but wants to work herself to death. At least this way she will make good of all those recipes she’s supposed to memorize.
I thought it was tough that her mother is bed ridden and Isabella has to do her mothers job plus her dead husband’s job plus on top of that Renee wants her to memorize all the recipes and pass everything on to her little brother after she’s worked her fingers to the bone.

I had heard of gooseberries, in a recipe book I have, there's a pie recipe that uses them. One that I have never been able to do since where I live there are no gooseberries. :/
It seems as if Renee is sensing she won't survive the winter. It has to do with if she truly wants to survive or follow her husband. For some it might seem cruel to her children, but love is that way and in those days, staying healthy wasn't easy, especially for people in not a very good economical situation.
It seemed Lady Cullen had all not only planned but discussed with everyone and just left Bella to talk to the last.

Edward is bitter, sad and lost. He wants to blame people about his life. It's not that simple, but it has caused trouble between him and his family. Jasper is well aware of the blame Edward puts on him and he has his own part of blame to put on Edward. Both are wrong and right and that's the toughest place to be at.
As for Lord Cullen, he was raised to be a Lord but was lucky in marrying for love, as he said. He is aware that part of his son's grief could be blamed on him, but that's how life was in those days. BUt as time has passed he seems to be considering going along more with feelings than mind.

Esme was impresively blunt for someone in her time and position. Still she can't seem to convince Bella entirely, but she will keep trying, no doubt.
As for Edward, with what we found out in this chapter, I think he won't be a very happy guy, which is of course understandable. We'll have to see how he be towards Bella.
Bella has resigned to give her life to her family, she doesn't regret her decision. She didn't give herself the oportunity to do. It's harsh, but true, there weren't too many options for her.

It was good to know Carlisle worries about Bella as much as Esme does. They both care for her and apparently have been trying to help her and doing it for a while now.
How many grandchildren do they have? Edward is her eldes, who's the other? Are they both married? It seems Esme doesn't have a relationship with his sons' wives. I guess this I'll find in the following chapters.

Isabella has a good mind for business yet sees herself as just a means of keeping her fathers goals and objectives alive.
Timothy and his wife Sophia seem to be a caring as Carlisle and Esme where Isabella and Charles are concerned. Good planning on their part. Now the question is how will Isabella respond to the changes? With relief or the feeling of letting her landlord down?

I initially thought Isabella might be cross about Carlisle taking some of her land back, but Timothy's idea would mean perhaps more money coming in and a sneaky to get more farm hands on the farm to work and ease her burden.

Isabella needs to stuff her stinking pride! I think the plans for her are good... but I don't know that they go along with Esme's plan on making her her daughter-in-law. Society would really bust a gut if a girl who made and sold preserves married the next Lord Cullen. She would be shunned for the rest of her existence.
