When Spencer puts his mind to it, he can be a very stubborn young man. He knows his weaknesses and he didn't want anyone to be able to talk him out of doing what needed to be done. He would have found it awkward and messy to talk to the team, so he avoided them.
As far as Spencer was concerned, that part of his life was over. He kept in touch with Rossi, who was the only person in the team he considered a true friend.
Glad you agree that his movements were necessary though.
