Mary, this stuff does happen and has happened for a long time. I (Kasi) am going to be 46 this year and from the time I was 9 until I was 17, I lived this same life Bella lives. My parents were divorced and I had no contact with my father. My mother worked 2 jobs and when she had free time she spend the majority of it with her boyfriend. It happens more than you can imagine, so yes it is fiction, but it does happen and it happens more than you know. In real life someone did break into my house while I was home alone on Christmas night I might add, so it does happen. I did my own laundry, cooking, and once or twice a week my mother would drop by and leave me groceries or money. We lived in one apartment for over a year and not once while we lived there did she sleep there. So yes this does happen as I said above.
