So I haven't read for a few weeks and by the way love your writing but I can't help my mind from creating what I think are Pauls issues. 1) He drank as a youth because Elizabeth took advantage of him in a sexual way. horrid, nasty woman.
And/or
2) Paul was the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident.
