BRAVO! it's been an EPIC ride.

i loved,   loved this story.

how you have thought this up with all

of the different characters and events

is just mind-boggling. unfortunately, this

story is somewhat buried in this site and i

just happened to come across it in my search.

wish more people would be able to find it.

it is sad how edward needed to be killed/dead

after what happened along with the other vamps.

but it's the reality rather than the fantasy of what

would truly happen ultimately b/t the wolves and the vamps

esp after so many years. rather ironic since the whole situation is

far from reality. i enjoyed the whole story. i could not stop until finished

reading b/t my i-phone, ipad and my pc depending on where i was.

ty for writing this.

It's probably a sign of old age, but I do love a happy ever after! It's nice that Bella and Ephraim are happy with each other and that they have twin boys and twin girls and they all love each other. Can't ask for more than that!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the reviews and ongoing support k1942 :)

This is by no means the kind of fic that would draw a big following but it has done well across the sites where it is posted and I appreciate the support I have received.

This chapter inparticular reminded me very much of The Midwich Cookoos/The Village of the Damned... like your take on it!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review darkmoonsfalcon :)

It is no surprise that it does as that was the germ of my idea in the first place... the otherwordliness of the Cullen's eyes and the idea that maybe they and theirs could be sinister rather than friendly and how would that look.

I have no doubt that Bella will give Ephraim a son, when the time is right, despite the restrictions of her parents. I don't really see anyone telling Ephraim Black what to do, unless maybe it would be Bella. Renee was a bit more accepting of his being in Bella's life than she could have been!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review k1942 :)

Maybe more than one... he is respectful of her situation though.

Yeah! I want to know what Charlie found at the Cullen house. Helluva explosion.

Christian missionaries in Africa?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Well, our sweet little Bella has quite the mouth on her!

Ephraim naked would be awesome, I'd say.

Imprinting. It would be hard to explain that. Glad she feels it, too.

***

Yeah. Explain this imprinting stuff to Charlie!

"I won't hump your leg"

OMG

LOL

"Was it too much to ask for that Bella find a nice boy her own age to date?"

For-real. I hear ya, Charlie. Ha ha ha ha ha

"If she comes home again."

Oh? Ephraim seems pretty confident Bella won't want to go back home to Charlie's house.

Future son-in-law. Yup.

Good job, Hon!

I think that went pretty well, considering everything involved! Bella knows a lot more now and hasn't had a problem with it, yet! Charlie isn't real thrilled, but I think he's resigned to the future of Bella and Ephraim being together!

Carlisle took the honorable way out, caring for his Esme and his family as he always did. I realize it had to happen, but still it makes me sad, a grand experiment that went to hell. Charlie and the Quileutes will be the only ones who will remember, from the sounds of it. See you when you can send us another chapter! Another sadness, as it's almost done!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review k1942 :)

It was never going to be sustainable, vampire natures being what they are. And after what happened Ephraim would have seen to it that they were all gone, even Jasper and Alice were lucky to escape.

Wow! That was a hell of a battle, Edward, Rosalie and Emmett gone, plus all the hybrids! Jasper has struck as good a bargain as he could have, considering the circumstances. That explosion may be the solution to the whole mess, I'm thinking!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review k1942 :)

Ephraim is nothing if not determined, and not the callow youth of 1935 who allowed himself to strike such a bad bargain. Jasper knows this, and did the only thing he could do to save his life and Alice's.

More on the explosion in the next chapter.

Sounds to me as if war is about to break out between vampires and shape-shifters! Ephraim won't let Edward kill Bella, neither would Charlie, I suppose. Carlisle won't want the wolves to kill Edward, so there it is ! Not seeing a lot of options here.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review k1942 :)

Carlisle is a complex individual. He has a self-interested side, but also a self-sacrificing, compassionate side. A lot of what is to come depends on how he reacts to all of this. But yeah, the time for diplomacy has probably passed.

I don't think it makes any difference how old Ephraim is in reality, physically he's only a few years older than his imprint. Some of the pack sure seems to find this pretty amusing, even knowing there is no controllingwhen it happens or with who! Paul is going to be a good guardian for Bella while she's at school, and Ephraim will be there the rest of the time. I wonder when he plans to tell her the whole truth?

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

He plans to get to know her a bit better and tell her when the time is right. It's a big bit of news. But maybe there might be a spanner thrown in the works. Stay tuned...

"How the mighty Alpha had fallen."

Great line.

Oh, yay! Ephraim has finally met Bella! Or Bella has finally met him.

A bit of a hint there that Jacob has a little crush on the lovely Isabella?

"until I can make her mine"

Ol' Ephraim is assuming a lot there. But how could she resist him? He's lovely.

I feel bad for Billy. He's so angry at the loss of his wife. Who can really blame him? It was Carlisle's fault, though he certainly didn't set out that day to kill anyone. Then there's Ephraim. He's lost two wives and he just seems sad.

I'm glad he's finally met Bella.

I liked that Ephraim didn't take any crap off of Carlisle. The wolves know about the vamp tricks and they'll be watching to make sure the vamps don't do any of that crap to Bella. I can see that Carlisle would bring up the treaty line, but Ephraim certainly had a point how the vamps have broken the spirit of the treaty, if not the letter of it.

***

"What the hell happened?" LOL

Good girl, Bella! I like that she has a bit of fire in her.

Great idea to have Paul go to school with her. He'll make a great guard. (I {heart} Paul.) It would be too suspicious to have four or five of the Quileute boys or girls show up at Forks High.

Since Paul won't have a problem putting his arm around a pretty girl, he should have no problem following Bella around. Now, to get Bella to understand that it's just for show. With Paul's size, that'll keep the other boys away.

I'm glad the rest of the older pack members will step up so that Ephraim can be as close to Bella as he can.

I wonder if Edward will be enthralled with her? Or any of the other, uh, children? Some of them are Edward's. Ephraim won't stand for that. None of the wolves will.

Then there's the demon spawn hybrids. Egads. There's like a dozen of them, right?

Woo HOO! Ephraim's plan sounds like it's going to work. What else can he do besides kidnap her? That wouldn't be such a great idea.

After Bella got to school in the morning and was creeped out by the demon spawn looking at her in the parking lot, I'm sure she was relieved to have Paul show up and throw his arm around her. That'll get the kids talking though. She just showed up, and she's already got a boy hanging on her? Rumors will fly! But if he keeps the demon spawn away ...

So eager to see who her teachers are and who will be in her classes.

Very curious to see what Jasper and Edward think of the new girl. Jasper will know that Bella is repulsed by the vamp hybrids. Will Edward be able to read her mind? If he can't, he'll be able to read Paul's, I suppose. Then there's all the rest of the mind readers that will try to see into her head.

Good Lord! There's so many of the Cullens, they'll be everywhere. They'll be coming at her from all sides. I expect she'll have some choice words for them!

Too bad Charlie has been susceptible to the vampire dazzling. Bella would have been better off going to the Reservation school.

But, looks like the ka-ka is about to hit the fan.

Good job!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review, Geezer :)

Jake's reaction to Bella was covered in chap2, he's interested but in more of a hormonal-teenage-boy kind of way and she doesn't respond well to him. People forget this, but he is more than 2 years her junior, and until he's started phasing he looks it. No match for the Alpha even if he thought he could get away with it, and he can't. Imprints override all that.

Ephraim is not going to take any crap from anyone... that's an imprint, you do whatever you have to in order to keep them safe, and you do whatever they want you to do in their life. He is I guess confident in putting it out there that he wants her, but his arsenal is better stocked than either Jake's or Edward's so why not be?

Bella isn't going to fall for Paul. She's said that he's an ass, it's just that he's a welcome ass under the circumstances. The lesser of several evils. And he has a cheeky charm of his own. Don't forget he imprinted on Rachel so is very much taken.

The Cullens, being teachers, have to rein in their shit. They've been told by now by Carlisle that Bella is off limits. Lets see if they can or want to stick to that though, or what the spawn might do... the road to true love never did run smooth.

Ahhhh! Leah imprinted on Sam! I liked that in the last chapter and this one. Leah finally gets Sam.

(Go figure)

"Mom's coffin was to be nailed shut, and nobody was to be allowed to view her."

You know it's bad when that happens. It's better that Billy didn't see her. He doesn't need to carry that memory with him throughout his long life.

"To hell with the Treaty; next time a Cullen clashed with a Quileute, I wouldn't do a thing to stop the battle that would follow, a battle that seemed inevitable."

Yeah! I can sure see why Ephraim would be fed up. They didn't know what they were getting into when they signed the treaty with the Cullens. Hell, Carlisle didn't even really know either. Who would have ever thought, back when they signed the treaty, that there would have been artificial insemination and the vamps would be breeding like bunnies? Who could have foreseen that?

Man! The crap is just raining down on Carlisle, too. He's getting it from both sides. I'm feeling bad for him.

"Over more than sixty years Ephraim Black had steered a course that had kept us safe, even as the Cullens produced half breeds and infested Forks with their presence, and other Cold Ones had come here to attack us. That was some achievement, even if Daddy couldn't see it yet. Maybe one day he might."

It all seems so hopeless for them (the wolves.)

I wonder ... will Rebecca start to phase, too?

In the Twilight Saga, Leah had mentioned that her monthlies stopped and that upset her because she wouldn't be able to have children and/or she didn't feel like a "full woman." But I don't suppose she'd know for sure, since her boyfriend in the Saga went and imprinted on somebody else, she didn't get around to getting another boyfriend, and she hadn't imprinted on anyone.

So I wonder ... will Rachel and Leah not be able to have kids? Eventually. They're both really young right now. And if any more girls phase ... But that seems almost anti-wolf. Why would females that turned into wolves not be able to have kids? Seems to me that would be counterproductive.

Leah and Rachel phased unexpectedly, they didn't have the growth spurt that the boys have had. Will the girls start to get bigger, or reach their adult height and form really fast?

Crap. Leah will be "older" than Sam. He'll have to catch up. And imprinting is all about the breeding. She'll just have to be patient and wait for him.

We haven't heard anything from the demon-spawn. What are those evil imps up to? I shudder to think!

Author's Response:

I think you might have reviewed also on ffn, as I have a sense of deja vu about this comment lol. But thanks for the review :)

Emily's a distraction, and I see no need for muffins in my fic, so why not give her and Sam both what they really want lol.

Eph has had what my mother might refer to as an "elegant sufficiency" of the Cold Ones, something that they will learn in the not-too-distant future if they don't know it already.

I see the reproductive thing maybe as an interruption than an end to all hope. Women can have their periods stop for all kinds of reasons, like being underweight, and they can come back. So I'd like to think that if Leah stopped phasing and her body returned to normal that she could have kids the same as any other woman.

The demon spawn are being quiet(er) but you haven't heard the last of them.

The responsibility of leadership lays heavy on Ephraim's shoulders. Funny that Rachel can see that more clearly than her father does.  I know he's lost his beloved wife, but the kids have lost their mother as well, plus Rachel has the added burden of phasing. I can't condemn the Black's hatred of the Cullens, but still can see it was an accident that devestated them all!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

I think Billy is a different personality. In canon his dislike for the Cullens is very pronounced, so I guess I'm riffing on that.

Oh boy! Carlisle's in the shits.

Interesting how Charlie said he didn't want Bella in Forks anymore because of the demon seeds. I mean, second generation hybrids. Friggin' monsters.

Oh man, I'm feeling really sorry for Ephraim, Billy - both of them losing wives to death. And I feel bad for Charlie, too. Renee isn't dead, but she's gone.

***

Billy's reaction to the sad news of his wife Sarah's death and daughter Rachel phasing into a wolf was well done.

I liked that part where Billy was sitting on the beach and Quil went to sit with him.

***

Oh damn! Leah changed when she was 13! And imprinted on Sam? Oh jeez, now there's two female wolves. Ephraim's going to be a little surprised at this news, I think.

(So he doesn't meet Emily later?)

How is the pack going to handle that? (Very carefully.)

Congratulations on being nominated in the 2013 Energize WIP Awards in the category of Best Twilight Non-Canon, and nominated as Most Motivational Reviewer!

Author's Response:

Thanks GeezerWench :)

Yeah the current gen are not like their parents... although no vampire is or should be considered to be harmless. The younger ones do have a repellent quality to them which Bella has picked up on.

Poor Billy, I did feel sorry for him as I wrote that and he needs to be comforted and helped to get through his trauma. The whole tribe will help but Quil has a special insight which will be of the most benefit to him I think.

I'm not a big fan of Emily, and having established that this fic is primarliy about the pack vs the vamps, and also Ephraim and Bella, there won't be a side track into the whole Sam/Leah/Emily thing. Not a fan of that storyline anyway. The fourth pack is going to have to get used to some women in it, and as a Black and the first to phase Rachel is the foremost.

Thanks for the congratulations, I'm honoured to have been chosen as a nominee.

This was sure an action packed chapter! Now the pack has two female wolves, and Leah has imprinted on Sam. Hope that works out for them both! I don't blame Leah for thinking that it's the Quileute women that seem to bear the brunt of their troubles. Poor Billy, losing his beloved Sarah, and dealing with his daughter phasing as a result. I even feel a bit of sympathy for Carlisle, he was just minding his own business, after all! Looking forward to the meeting of Ephraim and Bella!

Author's Response:

We'll see about Carlisle. I don't think this is a hanging offence, but like all of his missteps it does add up. We are getting close to the climax of the story, and all will become plain then.

Reviewer: GeezerWench Signed [Report This]
Date: 24 Feb 2013 4:39 PM Title: Chapter 38

I almost feel bad for Carlisle. Trying to be a nice guy and what has it gotten him? Shit on.  (No good deed goes unpunished, as they say.)

Apparently, Jasper's and Edward's grandchildren have needed their butts whipped from day one, and they didn't get it! Me thinks they should have gone to Boot Camp instead of all that home schooling.

Carlisle's thinking they should all leave when the kids finish high school is too late, I think. They should have left when the little sneaky bitches killed the dog. By then (high school) they'll be physically mature and be able to run off to wherever they want. Even before that. How would anyone be able to force them to stay?

Even now they could leave, I suppose. They would have to hide because they're so young looking. They would need an adult-looking guardian or have to be constantly moving around.

Money - always a problem. They'd need money to mingle with the humans for any length of time.

Errant thought - do vampires have an age when they are considered "adults"? I would guess it could be as soon as they are turned, but after their crazy newborn year would make better sense.

But what about hybrids? The Cullen Clan seems to have followed the "recent" human tradition of 18 to 21 years of age being "adult."

Oh no! The car wreck! Holy crap! Poor Rachel was with her. Oh damn! She phased -the first female wolf. And so young, too.

How are all the men-folk going to handle that? Probably not real well since it's been drilled into their heads for years and years about the men being the big, bad wolves.

Let me guess here ... it's in response to all the vamps and hybrids infesting Forks. No matter how many wolves there are, all those vamps and hybrids make more and more Quileutes phase.

Jasper's plan is being shot to hell. He didn't figure in any females phasing to wolves.

Oh my goodness! She recognized what she was right away. And recognized Carlisle, too. He's lucky, the other wolves "found" her so quickly.

Oh Lord, the shit is going to hit the fan! So much untimely death in that family.

Author's Response:

Well wow, this is a James Joycean type review...

And thanks for it!

The hybrids have strong ties to their parents, who are themselves hybrids, and to the Cullen Clan. More pointedly, they can have fun in Forks with few repercussions (as yet) because their existence raises no questions. Blending in is always going to be an issue for them, and no news is good news where the Volturi is concerned.

As for Rachel, yeah maybe not going to go down well. I have some ideas about that, more to come. The Blacks have two wolf gene markers instead of one (Seth and Leah three) so perhaps all other things being equal a female might be more likely to phase. Nothing is ever certain though, things like temperament also matter. But yeah the reason for all of the wolves is the presence of the vampires, something Jasper acknowledged when he came up with his master plan.

Thank heavens for the pack mind...

Can't say I blame Ephraim for asking God why his family and tribe are so afflicted! The losses they have suffered just keep coming, it seems. I'm so surprised Rachel has phased! Why one of the twins and not the other is strange. This whole tragedy is just one big mess! I also agree with Carlisle, the grandkids are slowly gaining power and will misuse that power, sure as the world!

Author's Response:

The accident was traumatic enough for Rachel to phase as a result of it. Rebecca wasn't there though. She may have a different personality to Rachel, and in canon she marries young and moves to Hawaii. So I guess we'll see what happens to her later on.

Damn. That Tony = demon seed, I'd say. And the little dear thinks Jasper's been neutered? I'd suspect Jasper is biding his time. He's had to wait a long time for his soldiers to grow up.

He and Edward don't really seem all that attached to their progeny, so I can't see Jasper having a problem putting the whammy on them. Unless they can kick his ass.

I sure hope Edward and Jasper figure out what's up with the youngest hum/vamps.

As for getting rid of the three nomads - I think that was Carlisle's fault. Due to Carlisle's influence. Did I mention that before?

I'd have to agree with ya there, about Quil and Molly. Even today, in small towns, such mixed-type marriages would be frowned upon.

Lived in West Virginia for five VERY long years and the whole state was like that.

Author's Response:

Thanks GW :)

Yeah Carlisle is a pacifist in canon - in this fic, not so much. Here his instincts to be nice sometimes have to take second place to his desire to stay put.

I had significant NA input into the chapter so I do think it is representative of the issues they would have had. What staggers me is that the pairing show up in canon without a word about how hard it would have been. Oh well.

That should be interesting.

Author's Response:

I firmly believe that even in canon, getting rid of the three of them in one go was doable and also desirable. What sort of vampire finds a threat to his sweetheart in another vampire's mind and doesn't end him?

So they won't be back later to disrupt proceedings lol. And as for Quil & Molly, they are a canon couple but for the life of me I can't see how they could be unless an imprint was involved. The 1950s are not the 2000s.

The moving in was canon, it's mentioned in Eclipse after a training session for the fight against the newborn army I think. Typical Alice. I just decided though to make Edward a little less welcoming because tbh all of the canon sweetness & light was giving me tooth decay.

The courtship was quick, but as per the link to past Quileute practices mentions, their actual marriage customs were in some cases a lot more basic than that, including for example a form of kidnapping.

Sorry  to hear you have been under the weather, and hope you are feeling much better.  Two important things this chapter, the effect of Bella's scented hankie on Ephraim, and Bill having a clue about why it perked him up.  The other thing was Josie's children causing the death of that dog. Yes you're right about that nose of Ephraim's. We know that he didn't meet Bella before 2005 as he imprinted on her then, but it doesn't mean that he didn't get a whiff of her so to speak. The tribe will pull together, and try to move on, but it will be difficult.

Quil will never forgive himself for not listening to Ephraim's warning about the storm. It cost him his imprint, and his alpha's wife, too. It could have been even worse, if Joy and the children hadn't been rescued. Somehow, though, I don't think Ephraim will remain alone the rest of his life.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

I must say all of the Quils are confusing. Because the Atearas were all together in this chapter, I gave up and started to refer to them as Three, Four etc. So you are a bit off base. It was Four who decided to go boating, and his wife Joy is alive. And it was Three (aka Old Quil in canon) who lost his imprint Molly. Hope that helps...by the way after the books were written SM inserted an extra generation of wolves, or so I've been told.

And no *coughs* Ephraim only thinks he'll be alone, a fair assumption at that point.

Pretty exciting for Charlie to be in on the first phase of his best friend. As much time as he spent on the reservation, I suppose it was inevitable that would happen. This was kind of a nice, calm, non-confrontational chapter, in the lives of vampires and shape-shifters in Forks. At least nothing too dangerous, compared to how things might have gone! It sometimes is an uneasy truce, this treaty they have between them. Maybe that's why the hybrid children have been a sore point in the dealings of both groups.

Yes there aren't always going to be big confrontations in the relationship between the wolves and the vamps, if there were the treaty wouldn't hold. It's more of a cold war and things have to be negotiated.

The idea of good guys/bad guys is a bit too black and white for this. Even Carlisle, who has an understandable desire to put down roots in the one place, has done things from time to time that weren't honest in order to achieve his dream.

There is a balance between the two sides which is tested from time to time by the things that people do. Having said that, the things that are happening in the story now are in a way the beginning of the end. Jasper crossed a line, even if he didn't break the treaty in doing so.

There will be more about the hybrids in the next chapter.

It figures that Carlisle would lose the first one. It's not surprising that Mr. Anderson wouldn't want the baby, either. This will make it so much easier to care for this hybrid baby, and Rosalie will be beyond thrilled. What was the real stroke of luck for the Cullens was Ephraim being able to calm the council and perhaps prevent war.. Jasper was just too damn smart for his own good, but seems to have gotten away with it, so far.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

Jasper has (correctly) surmised that  Ephraim is a man of principle and would not be the first to break the treaty. So as long as he doesn't, Jasper figures that he can do this. Of course not all consequences of a course of action are foreseeable at the time you make a decision.

I know what a strategist Jasper considers himself to be, but I really think he overshot this one! It would be horrifying if these babies came into the world wanting to eat their mothers! I see the possibilities  for death and destruction here! Hopefully  Carlisle can come up with a solution!

Author's Response:

Thanks :)

Renesmee wasn't like that but you'll have to wait and see what I have planned for the hybrids. It's not what you think.

well here we go. How did they impregnate the women? Artificially or incubus as night when they were sleeping?

Author's Response:

Artificially. As Jasper noted in the previous chapter, midnight visits are not his thing.

Thanks for the review :)

I see one flaw in Jasper's plan. What about the women who unwittingly carry a hybrid child? What would be the physical consequences for them? Being a vampire, neither Jasper nor Edward has thought of that I'll bet!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

Jasper probably doesn't really think too much about that, he would have confidence that Carlisle can help them. I personally think that most of the canon about hybrids is silly, and mine will be a bit different.

So Jasper wants to creat half vampires to out number the wolves. And why is Edward helping him dosent he know this is wrong I mean the wolves were there first.
Anyway think what Bella saw in chapter three was a school of half vampires . Or at least a group of them .

Author's Response:

Thanks jsl :)

I didn't actually say that Bella had seen the Cullens. What she does see remains to be seen...

Nice to think, though, how much better people's attitudes are nowadays, as compared to 1955. Slow change is better than no change. Sure doesn't bother me, as our family get-togethers include several colors besides "white", and nobody thinks anything of it. I'm just happy for Quil and Molly and am looking forward to more about the Quileutes and the Cullens!

Author's Response:

Thanks for that :)

There was extensive NA input into the chapter, I'm glad you liked it. I had a *headdesk* moment when I realised this canon pair were mixed, I don't know why that was done.

That was one hell of a battle, from the reservation to Forks. Glad all three nomads are disposed of. Ephraim has the sad duty of taking care of two new wolves and two dead ones. Now to add to his load, Quil has imprinted on a white girl. In the fifties, that probably wasn't a very good thing, prejudice being what it was. Think I'll takea minute to say how much I'm enjoying your story and looking forward to reading some more of it!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review - it means a lot that some can see and appreciate what I am trying to do here. I have a destination but to me the journey is as important and I am trying to make it as entertaining as well.

Jasper dislikes the expansion of the pack as much as Ephraim does, for quite different reasons, of course. Jasper the military planner doesn't like being outnumbered, while the Alpha hates to see his son buedened by this change.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

Yes, fair to say that nobody other than the baby wolves is thrilled to bits about it; it's a burden to be borne.

I can kind of see where this is going, Pretty soon half the Quileutes will be wolves. That should make Quil  and Levi happy, that the pack will soon outnumber the vampires. Ephraim taking all those boys into the wilderness on spirit quests ought to be quite an undertaking!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

As long as there are Cullens, there will be wolves. That's the premise of the story. But perhaps not everyone will be happy about it...

I always knew that Jasper was smart and the way he handled this encounter only confirms that. So far so good, only fifty-five more years until Bella shows up in Forks.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review :)

Jasper is smart, no doubt about it.

There will be time skips of course, and they will get much larger once we leave the fifties. But the story needs to have a solid foundation for 2005 to make sense.
