Yeah, when it comes to interpretation, the skill of your sonarmen is almost as important as your set!! Have you read Tom Clancy, BTW? He really gets it spot on when it comes to writing military sequences!!

I would say the sonarman, is more important than the set, but that's my personal thought, you can have the most high tech piece of kit in the world, but if the operator can't read it, then it's about as good as a chocolate teapot. As such I would say that in my little foray in to Clancy territory, my badguys are Mercs, they have the training, but without the standard means of operation, (learn, read, repeat) the skills are a bit rusty, so things are missed and mistakes are made. I have read Tom Clancy, and my bookshelf holds a vast number of his books, alongside Kuzneski, McNab, Ryan and McDermott, my mother still thinks I should've been born a boy, I tell her that if she wanted me to grow up girly, she should've shipped me out instead of letting me grow up on an army base.

Oooh I like your thinking. However as the submersible in this little fic is based on a Grumman, which is battery operated, it runs silently, therefore a displacement ping on sonar could and would most likely be construed as a marine animal, so in this sense passive sonar would be about as useful as a fish finder. ;)
In my head when writing this chapter I always considered my bad guys as using Active sonar, they may be a terrorist organisation with access to many awesome bits of kit, but I don't like giving too much of an advantage. hehehe. That and I kind of like the idea of sound waves being bounced about to find anomalies, echo location is cool! I just figured that pairing silent running with hiding them under a shelf would give them a fair chance. It may not be completely scientifically correct, but hey it doesn't hurt to bandy about a little poetic licence, that and they could have the spiffiest, sonar equipment known to man, but unless the guy manning the station and interpreting it isn't a plonker, they may as well have a map and a box of crayons.

I love that they escaped. Bella is an awesome character in this story, I love her smarts and strengths- but she doesn't overwhelm Edward's qualities. I kind of hope they don't have to do the emergency blow, but I know you will take care of them and add a good twist either way...

Thanks for the heads up, however if you check out the CIA website or the wiki listing you'll find that Langley is in Mclean. :o) As such I stand by my use of Mclean as the CIA HQ, as it is home to many agencies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intelligence_Agency

Don't forget this is meant to be a work of fiction and while I like to keep the agencies as factual as possible, poetic licence allows me to stretch the facts and bend them to suit my twisted version of events. Who knows for my next trick I might move Roswell from New Mexico to Azerbijan and turn Edward into a three headed alien in a Men in Black style romp through known and unknown universe. :oP
But I'll remember to ask Tom Clancy next time I have him over for tea and cake. Perhaps I could interest him in a nice Chianti and some favva beans. They'd be the perfect apperatif before we 'Splinter some Cells' ;oP
